The question
Whose insecurities and priorities are visible in a peace process? Gender SCORE Cyprus examined how gender shapes experiences of security, economic and political participation, and intercommunal relationships. Its island-wide survey included 1,600 respondents, with 800 Greek Cypriots and 800 Turkish Cypriots.
Implemented in 2017-2018 as part of the Security Dialogue Initiative, the study combined stakeholder interviews and focus groups with survey research and participatory interpretation. Support came from Germanyās Federal Foreign Office and the Netherlandsā Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Research approach
Research and stakeholder engagement included discussions in the UN Buffer Zone. The work explored how restrictive gender norms and masculinities connect with violence and barriers to womenās participation, bringing the findings into dialogue with the Women, Peace and Security agenda.
What the research brings into view
The briefs distinguish formal support for equality from the beliefs and material conditions that constrain participation. They also connect womenās political representation with openness to dialogue across the divide. Those relationships offer entry points for a more inclusive peace process, rather than evidence that one specific intervention has already changed it.
The three linked policy briefs are institutional outputs of the research team.
