Policy Entry Points for Improving Gender Equality in the Turkish Cypriot Community

How gender norms, family assets, and economic and political independence shape women's participation.

The story

This institutional brief examines gender inequalities in the Turkish Cypriot community, using the Security Dialogue Initiative and Gender SCORE Cyprus. The island-wide study included 800 Turkish Cypriot respondents and participatory interpretation with stakeholders. My contribution was leadership of the underlying research design, analysis, and engagement, not sole authorship of this brief.

A finding to take away

Womenโ€™s reported disadvantages in family assets and economic and political independence sit alongside restrictive gender norms. High perceptions that equality has already been achieved can coexist with those inequalities. The brief argues for both empowerment and a more specific understanding of barriers to participation.

These comparisons concern the 2017-2018 research period, not every individual or the causal effect of an equality programme. Methods and opening findings are on PDF pages 3-4.
