A Chandra Virgo cluster survey of spiral galaxies. I. Introduction to the survey and a new ULX sample

A survey of ultraluminous X-ray sources in 75 Virgo-cluster galaxies, connecting observations with models of X-ray binary populations.

The story

My visiting X-ray research at Curtin later connected with this wider collaboration. The paper analyses Chandra observations to catalogue exceptionally luminous X-ray sources in spiral galaxies.

A finding to take away

The survey identifies about 80 ultraluminous X-ray sources across 75 galaxies. The observed population is broadly consistent with models linking X-ray binaries to stellar mass and star formation, while individual bright sources still require careful interpretation.

The paper describes the full survey teamโ€™s work; my contribution is part of that collaboration, not ownership of the entire catalogue.
