Caribbean SCORE

A seven-country study of social cohesion, civic participation, violence, and gender equality in the English-speaking Caribbean.

The question

What holds communities together, and where do social exclusion and violence weaken those bonds? This regional SCORE study developed a shared framework while retaining country-specific perspectives. A survey of 3,073 citizens informed a subregional report and country factsheets.

The study covered the Bahamas, Belize, Dominica, Jamaica, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and Trinidad and Tobago. It was developed with the Caribbean-Region Peace and Development Unit, UN Resident Coordinator offices, and UNDP, with support from the Joint UNDP-DPPA Programme on Building National Capacities for Conflict Prevention. Desk research and consultations with regional experts and stakeholders informed a questionnaire tailored to local concerns, including violence, democratic values, and regional integration.

Research approach

Its dedicated gender chapter examines stereotypes and masculinities alongside equality and diversity. This makes gender norms part of the explanation of social relationships and violent attitudes, rather than limiting the analysis to differences between male and female respondents.

The analytical work connected demographic and gender profiles with models of intergroup harmony, social mobility, civic engagement, and violent attitudes. The resulting report and factsheets translate a regional study into country-level perspectives that partners can use in discussions about prevention and development priorities.

What the research brings into view

Family and community relationships connect questions often considered separately: mobility, civic participation, wellbeing, and violence. The gender analysis also identifies different patterns among men and women. Country and subgroup differences matter; the regional picture is not a substitute for local interpretation.
