Understanding Social Cohesion and Peace Capacities: SCORE South Sudan Policy Report

Local capacities for peaceful citizenship, peace institutions, and reducing civilian militarisation in conflict-affected communities.

The story

Drawing on 2,139 surveys across 69 communities, the report examines social cohesion and capacities for peace in the Aweil, Bentiu, Bor, Rumbek, and Yambio areas. I co-led authorship with Christopher Louise, translating research and predictive models into policy recommendations alongside the wider analytical team.

A finding to take away

Peaceful citizenship is closely connected with wider social-cohesion patterns. The report argues for strengthening local institutions and civic spaces while addressing the conditions associated with civilian militarisation. Its analysis of peace infrastructures includes womenโ€™s leadership and participation, rather than treating gender as a separate question.

Findings reflect the surveyed areas and local variation, not a nationwide causal evaluation. Lead-author and co-author credits are on PDF page 3; the executive summary begins on page 8.
