Pathways to Resilient Citizenship: A Cross-National Investigation Based on SCORE Data from Six Conflict-Affected Countries in Africa, Asia, and Europe

Comparing the conditions associated with constructive citizenship across six conflict-affected societies.

The story

The chapter compares SCORE evidence from six countries to ask what helps people remain constructively engaged under adversity. It connects individual capacities with family, community, and institutional conditions.

A finding to take away

State legitimacy, socioemotional capacities, and family cohesion recur as important factors, although the patterns are not identical across countries. Willingness to participate, education, and information consumption are more ambiguous: their relationship with constructive or violent citizenship depends on context.

The comparison identifies associations and possible entry points, not a universal formula for peaceful citizenship.
