Multifamily Healing Spaces: Development of a Family-Based Intervention for Recovery and Resilience in Rwanda

A family-based approach connecting intergenerational recovery with relationships, reconciliation, and resilience.

The story

Recovery after collective violence is also a family process. This paper describes the development of a context-specific intervention in Rwanda, combining work across families and generations with separate sessions for families, parents, and young people.

I co-authored the paper, with gender dynamics within families central to my contribution to the underlying analysis. This connects earlier research and capacity building in Rwanda with intervention development; it is not a publication of the separate societal-healing trial manuscripts.

The central idea

Family relationships can connect individual recovery with wider reconciliation. The intervention addresses parenting, relationships between spouses, and intergenerational dynamics alongside trust between families.

This is an account of intervention development and proposed processes of change, not an impact evaluation demonstrating effectiveness.
