The question
How were Syrian refugees represented in newspaper coverage on either side of Cyprus’s divide? This bicommunal project examined recurring narratives in Greek-Cypriot and Turkish-Cypriot media.
Research approach
Python scripts searched tens of thousands of newspaper articles. Statistical analysis of keyword associations helped identify recurring narratives and potential reporting biases, with graphical visualisations used to communicate the findings.
The approach
The work connected computational text analysis with a social question: how language shapes the representation of people seeking refuge. Keyword associations are a way to investigate patterns in coverage, not a standalone measure of journalists’ intentions. There is no linked public publication for this project.
